Exploring Washington’s Cities and Towns

Cities are the governments closest to the people. Efficient and effective city governments are the foundation for vibrant communities and  economic opportunities. But what makes a city and why does it matter to you?

The Association of Washington Cities (“AWC”) published this high-level quick read to describe how cities in Washington function: Exploring Washington’s Cities and Towns. You’ll discover how cities budget, how city funds are used, what city governments do, and what city employees, all interspersed with facts and figures that illustrate the breadth of work that cities do every day to make our communities shine.

AWC is a private, nonprofit, nonpartisan corporation that represents Washington’s cities and towns before the state legislature, the state executive branch and with regulatory agencies. A wide array of programs and services are offered to our members.
