A city contractor needs to close this segment of South Royle Road for two months, August 8 through October 8, in order to install underground utilities and establish the new roadway grade as part of the Royle Road Roundabout project. This work will complete the Roundabout project, which is the first phase of a set of improvements planned for Royle Road.

The closure will be active from S Fieldcrest Drive south to S 19th St. This will be a complete road closure. Access to surrounding neighborhoods remains open on detours along S 15th St/S Wells Dr, S Fieldcrest Dr, and S 19th St. Thank you for your patience using detours around this necessary closure.

Royle Rd Asphalt Repairs – A city contractor will be completing asphalt repair work along S Royle Road on Monday, August 15 beginning at 7am. During this time, there will be one way traffic control and flagging south and north of the current closure. Expect delays.
This project is to repair failed asphalt sections of the road until the next phases of the Royle Road Improvement project are funded and built. The contractor will install temporary lane markers for any striping that is removed and will return in a few weeks to stripe the road.

Traffic Calming along Detour

The City understands that this detour route will have significant impacts on families living in the Seven Wells and Cloverhill neighborhoods. We are working to mitigate and minimize these impacts as much as possible. If you are using a detour route through the area, please be respectful and reduce your speed on residential streets.

Traffic Calming Measures that will be implemented along the detour route in Seven Wells neighborhood include:

  • Placement of a speed monitoring trailer that flashes when it senses vehicles above the speed limit.
  • Installation of temporary speed bumps.
  • Installation of temporary signs urging drivers to slow down.
  • Painting of pedestrian crosswalks at appropriate intersections.
  • Enhanced traffic patrol in the area.

Even though roads through the Cloverhill subdivision are not part of the official detour route, it can reasonably be anticipated to see some increase in traffic, so the City is implementing traffic calming measures there as well. Cloverhill traffic calming measures include:

  • Placement of a speed monitoring trailer that flashes when it senses vehicles above the speed limit.
  • Enhanced traffic patrol in the area.
  • Installation of temporary signs urging drivers to slow down.

Royle Road Improvements

The final result of these projects will be an improved roadway all along S Royle Rd, from Pioneer St to S Hillhurst Rd, with sidewalks and bike lanes on both sides, one lane in each direction, and a center median with left turn pockets.

  • Phase 1: Royle Road and Wells Dr Roundabout Construction and Improvements to S 19th St. (Current Work)
  • Phase 2: Royle Road Improvements from Phase 1 north already improved segment near Legacy Trails Apartments. (Summer 2023)
  • Phase 3: Royle Road Improvements from S 19th St to S Hillhurst Rd, including Gee Creek Culvert Replacement. (Currently seeking funding, schedule TBD)

The City of Ridgefield is working with the school district, transportation, emergency services, and utilities to make sure they are aware and prepared for using detour routes.
