[ARCHIVED] Celebrate a New Ridgefield Landmark – Steel Cranes on the Pioneer Street Overpasses

The Pioneer Rail Overpass with safety screens.

Join us for an Overpass Art Reveal on Saturday, May 3 at 11 AM during the First Saturday Spring Festival!

Colorful steel sandhill cranes are taking flight in Ridgefield—perched along safety screens of both Pioneer Street Overpasses. To celebrate this exciting new installation, the City invites you to a special viewing from Overlook Park, followed by a walk across the Rail Overpass. One of the artists behind these stunning sculptures will also be in attendance to mark the occasion.

Installation Timeline

The cranes will be installed on the Rail Overpass the week of April 28, with installation on the I-5 Overpass to follow the next week. The I-5 Overpass installation also includes safety screening along the length of the overpass.

This installation timeline coincides with the 10th Anniversary of Ridgefield First Saturdays: Spring Festival, and we couldn’t miss the opportunity to celebrate with our community!

Project Background

The installation features a series of vivid steel sandhill cranes in various stages of flight, mounted on screening panels along the Pioneer Street overpasses—one in downtown Ridgefield and one at the I-5 interchange. The cranes are designed to appear as though they are flying across the overpasses, extending the full length on both sides.

This public art project serves to visually connect downtown Ridgefield with the growing Ridgefield Junction area along the interstate, creating a recognizable landmark for those traveling to Ridgefield and enjoying our historic downtown.

This artwork has been years in the making, supported in part by the Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) and the Cowlitz Tribal Foundation.

We can't wait to celebrate the arrival of this new placemaking landmark with you on Saturday, May 3!
